Chapter 14 :- A Glimpse of Care in a Cold World

Karan

I woke up feeling a slight pain in my hand. It had been wrapped around her the entire night in the same position. I opened my eyes, rubbing my forehead and checking the time - 5:50 AM.

My eyes found her, curled up against me. Her arms were wrapped around my chest, and one leg rested across my torso like I was some kind of pillow.

She looked so peaceful… sweet, as always.

I stared at her, wondering how someone could be this beautiful, this innocent.

I gently brushed a strand of hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear, careful not to wake her. Her lips -  soft, pink - looked so tempting. I almost feel like to kiss her right then and there.

As I kept staring, the alarm screamed. I clenched my teeth, annoyed, and shut it off.

She woke up with the noise, making those cute little sounds she always does while rubbing sleep from her eyes.

Realizing the position she had been sleeping in, she quickly removed her arms and legs from around me.

I hated that.

She slowly looked at me, her eyes meeting mine. But then she immediately lowered her gaze after realizing I was already watching her.

I liked the way she behaved around me - shy.

“Good morning, angel,” I greeted her with a smile.

“Good morning,” she replied quickly, still in her sleepy, soft voice.

She escaped from my hold almost immediately, rushing into the bathroom. She came out after fifteen minutes, tying her hair up in a bun, and walked out of the room without even glancing at me.

I got ready too and headed to the gym for my usual hour-and-a-half workout session.

The alarm hit six. My body begged for five more minutes, but life doesn’t wait. So I dragged myself out of sleep.

I had been so comfortable sleeping. Rubbing my sleepy eyes and letting out a soft groan, I opened them...

And the view - was mesmerizing and terrifying.

My head had been resting on a perfect bare chest. My arms and legs were tangled around him.

God. I can’t believe I slept like that the whole night.

Snapping back to reality, I quickly pulled my arms and legs away from him.

I glanced up slowly - only to meet his intense gaze already fixed on me. I looked down immediately.

“Good morning, angel,” he said in his tough, dark, yet weirdly sweet voice.

I greeted him back and hurried into the bathroom, escaping his hold before he could say or do anything else.

After brushing, freshening up, and doing my usual morning routine, I walked straight out of the room while tying my hair. I didn’t even give him a look, but I knew his cold eyes were watching me.

In the kitchen, I checked today’s menu:
- Two poached eggs
- One slice of toasted multigrain bread
- Half an avocado with rock salt and crushed black pepper
- Black coffee, no sugar

I opened the cabinets and pulled out all the ingredients. I made everything carefully, without a single mistake.

I didn’t serve it immediately - he’d told me yesterday morning  he wanted his food hot.

So I stood in the kitchen, waiting for him to come.

I saw him coming down the stairs in a royal blue shirt tucked into black pants. His white coat was draped over his arm, and his hair was neatly styled.

He looks so divine. But I know the reality behind that good looking face.

Bringing myself back from whatever trance I had been in, I began arranging the plates and placed the breakfast on the table for him.

He finally walked into the dining room. His cold eyes landed on me as he sat in his chair, glancing at his plate and examining every detail.

“Have breakfast with me,” he said, not even looking up, still flipping through a patient’s report.

I didn’t understand. Why was he asking me that? He never had before. I mean, we did sit for dinner together, but breakfast?

I kept staring at him, wide-eyed and confused.

“Didn’t you hear me?” he repeated, this time in a colder, more demanding tone.

So, I sat down quietly, made my own plate, and started eating.

He finished before I did, stood up, and walked away without saying a word.
I looked up at him as he faded from my sight.

He’s so mean.

It’s not like I wanted to spend more time with him, but still...
Isn’t it basic courtesy to wait for someone to finish when you’ve asked them to eat with you?

I shook my head and kept eating. After breakfast, I cleaned the dishes and the kitchen. Once done, I headed to my room to shower and get ready for the rest of the day.

After spending almost an hour getting ready, I went to the library to find something to read.

There’s not much to do here - just cooking and a bit of cleaning. Since it’s only the two of us, the house doesn’t get very messy. Cooking doesn’t take too much time either.

I wasn’t hungry, so I didn’t make lunch yet. I just stayed in the library, reading.

After a while, I got up and headed toward the garden, still reading. I was so engrossed in the book that I didn’t notice where I was walking - until I bumped into something solid.

His chest.

I stumbled, breath caught, but before I could fall, his hand gripped my waist - firm, possessive.

When I looked up… those eyes - cold. Unreadable.

I slowly slipped out of his grip, putting a little space between us.

“H-how did you come so early?” I asked, raising my eyebrows in surprise.

“It’s my house. I can come whenever I want,” he said, not breaking eye contact.

Suddenly, I remembered - it was 1 PM. I hadn’t made lunch yet. What was I going to feed him?

Before I could say anything, he asked, “Do you want to go see your mother?”

I froze, stunned, staring at him like he had just grown horns.

“Are you just going to look at me like that, or are you going to answer my question?” he said, raising a brow.

“Yes, I want to see her,” I replied quickly, nodding.

“Okay. Go get ready. I’m waiting here. And...” he paused, almost hesitating, “...we’ll do lunch outside.”

I didn’t ask anything more. Just nodded and went to the room to get dressed.

Karan

I asked her to join me for breakfast. I made it sound like a command - because I didn’t want her to think I cared.

She looked surprised at first but sat down eventually, nibbling on her toast like a baby.

I wanted to sit there longer, but if I had… she would’ve thought I was going soft.

I can’t let her think that. Not yet.
So I left.

I know she must’ve been annoyed, but that’s just who I am.

~~~•••~~~
The hospital was quieter than usual. No emergencies. No surgeries. For once, they didn’t need me.
I wrapped up my rounds, signed off the reports, and left without being told.
Very unlike me.
While driving home, I got this random thought - what if I took her out for lunch?
But I couldn’t just ask her like that. It had to seem like something else.
C'mon, Karan….think.
That’s when it hit me - I’d ask if she wanted to see her mother. We could have lunch on the way back.
That way, it wouldn’t seem like I was trying too hard.
Perfect.
I sped home.
As I walked in, I saw her heading toward me, eyes buried in a book.
She didn’t notice me until she bumped into my chest. I held her before she could fall.
God… she looked so beautiful. Those wide eyes, full of surprise.
She slowly stepped back, nervous.
“Do you want to go see your mother?” I asked. Her reaction was priceless - complete shock.
“Are you just going to look at me, or will you answer?” I asked again, raising my brow.
“Yes, I want to see her,” she nodded quickly.
I told her to get dressed and come down. She ran up the stairs, and I couldn’t help but smile.
She looked so happy.
She came down wearing a faded lavender knee-length dress with a white jacket - delicate and quiet, just like her mood.Her hair was tied in a loose braid. Soft pink lips.
Simple. Graceful.
She stood in front of me, eyes on the floor, fidgeting with the hem of her dress.
I headed to the car. She followed silently. Her joy was written all over her face.
The drive was quiet - neither of us spoke.
Once we reached the hospital and parked, she asked, “Are you also going to come inside?”
She didn’t want me to. That was obvious.
But I wasn’t going to leave her out of my sight.
“Yes, I will,” I replied with a smirk. She looked down again, unsure.
“But what do I tell her if she asks about you?” she asked. “I haven’t told her about the contract. I don’t want her to know.”
I thought for a second.
“Okay… tell her I’m your boss. That I came with you to visit her.”
She seemed to agree with that.
“But why do you want to come inside anyway?” she asked, frowning.
I leaned closer. “You don’t get to question me. Have you forgotten that?”
“I-I’m sorry,” she stammered, eyes downcast.
“C'mon now, let’s go,” I said, taking her hand - making sure everyone could see she was mine.
